   GWPCA National Field Futurity Regulations

QUALIFICATIONS:  The National Field Futurity is open to only properly nominated German Wirehaired Pointers which have been properly registered with the American Kennel Club. Litter owners and owners of individually nominated dogs and all owner/co-owners of entered dogs must be GWPCA members.*   Nomination procedures are as follows:

1.       A litter of GWPs can be nominated for up to 90 days after the whelp date.

2.       An individual GWP from an un-nominated litter may be nominated up to six months after the whelp date.

3.       Renomination of any litter individual GWP must be done prior to its first birthday.

4.      Owners of GWP litters are strongly encouraged to send the names, addresses and phone numbers of individuals purchasing pups to the Secretary of the GWPCA so the new owners may receive a packet of information about local clubs, breed activities, the GWPCA and the National Field Futurity.

The first nomination shall be $25.00 and renomination shall be $15.00 (subject to change by the Board of Directors).  Litters whelped on or after July 1 of one year and on or before June 30 of the second year, shall be eligible to run in the Futurity to be held in the fall of the third year.  Dogs and bitches will be between sixteen and twenty-eight months of age.  Nominations may be made by completing the official Nominating Form and submitting the $25.00 fee.  Upon receipt and acceptance of the Nominating Form and fee, the Futurity Chairman will forward the Renomination Forms to the applicant.

PURSE: The purse shall consist of all nomination, renomination and entry fees, less the expenses of the stake.  All monies shall be divided between the first three placements according to the following schedule:

1.       50% to First place (60% to owner, 40% to nominator).

2.       30% to Second place (60% to owner, 40% to nominator).

3.       20% to Third place (60% to owner, 40% to nominator).

BRACING:  A minimum of thirty minutes shall be allotted for each brace in the series.  A minimum of two series and a maximum of three series shall determine the placements.  The judges shall decide the length of additional series.  Second and third series dogs shall be given a minimum of forty-five minutes rest between braces unless permission for a shorter time period is agreed to by the handler.  The final series shall include a retrieve with shooting being done by the official guns.  The final series shall be for dogs which, in the judge’s opinions, are in placement contention.  The retrieve can be done in the following manner:

  • The handler can hold the dog by the collar

  • A freshly killed game bird will be thrown

  • While the bird is in the air, a 20 gauge or larger shotgun will be shot in the air.

  • The dog is then released to retrieve the bird

Birds:    Game birds, the likes of which are native to the area and grounds where the Futurity is run, shall be used throughout the stake.  A minimum of three such game birds shall be placed immediately prior to each brace of the first series.  The first series shall be a single course without bird field.  A blank gun shall be fired by the handler on all bird contacts during all series.

Entries:   Entry forms shall be mailed to all nominations at least sixty (60) days prior to the running of the stake.  The close of entries and the drawing shall be on the same date as the close of entries for the GWPCA National Field Trial.  The Chairman and any interested parties may attend the drawing at such time and place as designated by the Chairman.  The Futurity shall be run in conjunction with the GWPCA National Field Trial.

Judging:  The hosting club along with the Field Events Advisory Committee shall select the judges with the approval of the GWPCA Board of Directors.  Judging emphasis is to be placed on dogs that show a keen desire to hunt, which are bold and independent, have a fast and yet attractive style of running and demonstrate intelligence in seeking likely bird objectives.  All placed dogs must point staunchly, must make a reasonable retrieve and should show a willingness to handle and please.  If at all possible, all placements should be awarded.  Bird less dogs may be called back at the discretion of the judges.  Four placements may be awarded.  However, only First through Third places shall share in the purse.

Handling:  Horseback handlers must use horses strictly as a conveyance.  The pace of the handlers shall be set by the marshal.  Before leaving the directed route, handlers must seek permission of a judge.  Scouts may only be sent upon permission of a judge.  Scouts may help locate a dog, but shall not be used to bring the dogs to the front or otherwise handle dogs.  Infractions of handling rules may be grounds for a lower placement or disqualification.

Governing Rules:  Except as otherwise noted herein, the rules for American Kennel Club Pointing Breed Field Trial Open Derby Stakes apply.  Copies of the most recent AKC Field Trial Rules Book may be obtained by writing to:
